As one of the basic language skills,vocabulary serves as an undertaker of language meaning and plays a crucial role in English learning in senior high schools.The use and comprehension of vocabulary are the critical components of successful English learning which could be the core of solving language problems.Therefore,it is necessary to explore an effective method to improve students' vocabulary proficiency.Movie teaching,as one of the approaches of improving students' vocabulary proficiency,has aroused the interest of researchers.The present study intends to apply movie teaching in senior high school English vocabulary lesson,attempting to answer two questions: 1)Can movie teaching improve the learners' motivation of learning vocabulary ? 2)Can movie teaching improve the learners' productive vocabulary?The experiment lasted 14 weeks,with four teaching tasks assigned for movie teaching.The participants were 102 senior one students from Huaqiao Senior High School of Guangdong,who were averagely divided into two groups: the experimental group(N=51)and the control group(N=51).The participants in experimental group and control group separately were divided into 3 teams and every team had 17 participants(three teams had 17 participants respectively),including 17 from high level,17 from moderate level and 17 from low level based on their English middle test scores.The experimental group adopted movie teaching in vocabulary lesson while the control group adopted traditional method.In this study,the author combined qualitative and quantitative research methods,including a questionnaire survey,an interview,classroom observation and vocabulary tests.The results could be concluded as follows: 1)Compared with those in the control group,the participants in the experimental group made a significant progress in learning vocabulary,which indicates that movie teaching could improve the participants' motivation of learning vocabulary.2)Movie teaching could improve learners' productive vocabulary and the scores of vocabulary test in the experimental group were much higher than that in the control group.The findings above reveal that movie teaching is an effective approach to improving the learners' proficiency of productive vocabulary as well as their motivation.Therefore,it is feasible and effective to apply movie teaching in senior high school.
