| With the rapid development of economy and the establishment of capitalism in the western word,detective fictions came into being.It was the British author Arthur Conan Doyle who really brought the detective fiction to its climax.His representative work Sherlock Holmes Series is regarded as an unsurpassed classic.Once being published,this work has been so warmly welcomed by many translators all around the world that it has been translated into more than 50 languages.Almost one night,the leading character Sherlock Holmes becomes a household name.Traditional translation studies focus on studying the text from the perspective of translation standards.“Faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance” which was proposed by the renowned translator Yan Fu have long been regarded as an important standard for evaluating the quality of translation.Since the 1970 s,“culture turn” appeared in the western translation study field.The School of Cultural Translation represented by Susan Bassnett and Andre Lefevere holds the view that translation studies should focus on the interrelationship between translation and culture,the influence and restriction of culture on translation,and not only on the linguistic level.According to Andre Lefevere,any translation produced in given time and in given society was under the manipulation of certain ideology and poetics.Still now,most translation studies of Sherlock Holmes choose the versions in the late Qing Dynasty as their research objects.Comparative studies on cross-century versions are very scarce.The main versions of different translation periods are a good reflection of the ideology and poetics of different periods,so it has certain research value.Besides,most translation studies prove that translation is manipulated by ideology and poetics.However,they don’t explore which onewill take a more dominant role in influencing translation in different historical period.What will be the trend of Chinese translation in the future? Based on previous studies,this paper makes an exploratory research on the above questions,which is innovative to some extent.This thesis chooses three typical versions of The Hound of the Baskervilles as its research objects,i.e.,the edition published in 1916,the edition published in1981 and the edition published in 2015.Under the guidance of Lefevere’s manipulation theory,this thesis makes a concrete analysis on ideology and poetics and tries to find out the strategies for the translation of Holmes’ detective novels in different historical period.Through comparative study,the author finds that the version in 1916 was mainly influenced by the conservative mainstream ideology in the late Qing Dynasty.As a result,domestication strategies such as omission,addition and alteration were adopted in this version.The influence of ideology became weaker in the 1981 version.This version was more faithful to the source text.Although vernacular was prevailing at that period,there still remained some expressions of classical Chinese.The version in 2015 was least influenced by ideology among the three versions.This version adopted foreignization strategy to maintain the information as much as possible in their translation to achieve the same effect as the original text.With the development of the age,there is a tendency in Chinese translation history that the influence of ideology on translation is gradually becoming weaker,while poetics is playing a stronger role in translation. |
