Since he led the New Wave of Hong Kong Cinema with his first film The Extras,Yim Ho has established his position in Chinese films with his unique works.Yim Ho has directed thirteen films, among which Homecoming,Red Dust,The Day the Sun Turned Cold and The Sun Has Ears have won him numerous domestic and international awards, which shows Yim Ho's advanced skill and creativity in film directing.Yim Ho is usually introduced as one of the New Wave group in film study writings. His film creation profile is generally outlined briefly in an overview of description.Furthmore, the research on Yim Ho's film is relatively lacking and lopsided. It is mainly focused on the study of narrative and image ontology and is mostly a simple summary with a single angle of view. This thesis takes Yim Ho's film creation and works as the research object. It takes an overall view to Yim Ho's film combining the two methodologies including film ontology research and culture research.Yim Ho's film presents a rich and diverse pattern of types with the continuous exploration of narrative and audiovisual methods. The coexistence of drama and life flow is a remarkable style feature of his film. What's more, the presentation of the folk landscape, surrealism paragraph and the background of the great times further enriched the film text.Since he went to the mainland to film Homecoming,Yim Ho has started his film career as an offshore Hong Kong director for more than a decade. Both mainland imagination and Hong Kong depiction are conveyed in the films, therefore, translocal filming comes as a main feature of Yim Ho's creation. As a Hong Kong director who practiced the translocal filming strategy,Yim Ho went to the motherland in search of the national identity while came back to Hong Kong to confirm the local identity.By translocal filming Yim Ho constructed his imagination of the nation and the metaphor of the floating city with descriptions of the cultural China and the reality of Hong Kong island. What behind the strategy is his questioning and thinking about the cultural identity of Hong Kong.In addition,Yim Ho's film conveys profound humanistic concern by revealing the living state of human beings and human nature, which contains the director's thinking and perception of life.
