Compliments are an "adjacency pairs" structure,and praise and response are symbiotic.Compliments,as an evaluative language,have positive effects on both sides of communication.And proper response is also conducive to communication.Nowadays,with the continuous development of China,more and more foreigners come to China to study and work.It is very beneficial for them to master the Chinese compliments and the response strategies in daily life.In the past four decades,the compliments and the response have become the focus of research which has been involved in pragmatics,sociolinguistics and cross-cultural communication and other fields.The language forms,topic distribution,response strategies,gender differences,and Sino foreign comparisons of symmetric compliments were also investigated.But the research of social power and compliment model is still inadequate.In this paper,the theories and methods of social linguistics will be put into practice,which helps to describe the tendency of foreign students'Compliment model and Strategies of Chinese Complement Responses and analyze the differences between the Chinese native speakers and investigate reasons.The data are collected through a combination method of Discourse Completion Task(DCT).The produced data are analyzed quantitatively with the aid of the chi-square statistical tool.When significant tendencies are identified,they would be interpreted qualitatively in a pragmatic point of view.The results suggest that 1.In general,foreign students prefer Explicit compliment.Compared with Laotian students,American students prefer to use non-reactive mode.American boys are more likely to praise directly than girls,and Lao boys tend to be more indirect.2.For foreign students,it is far more to choose compliment responses of receiving than the rejected.Explicit acceptance is the preferred strategy.They will change the response strategy when the compliment patterns are changed.More women tend to accept implicitly and refuse indirectly while more men are likely to accept explicitly.3.Both Chinese native speakers and foreign students like to use explicit compliment,but it is more frequent for foreign students to use the non-reactive mode.Both Chinese and international students tend to make use of the explicit acceptance of responses,but foreign students like to refuse indirectly more frequently than Chinese speakers.In addition,in this paper,the differences between Chinese native speakers and foreign students have been carried on the reason analysis.The author thinks that the difference between the background of the western civilization,the difference between the thinking patterns,the change of the teaching material and the negative migration of the language are the reasons for the difference.This study investigates the Chinese compliment model and strategies of complement responses of the foreign students from the perspective of sociolinguistics,so as to make researches of the impact from social power on the the using of compliment model and the compliment model on the Strategies of Complement Responses.This study analyzes the reason why foreign students choose the different compliment models and strategies of complement responses,and its findings have valuable implications for the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language.
