Abstract/Summary:
Taking the English-Chinese translation of six short stories from A Short Story Collection of O.Henry as a project, the author summarizes some major issues and difficulties, analysis of causes scrupulously during the process of translation. With the assistance of Mr.Yang Jing, the paper also probes into several related solutions to these problems.Hans J.Vermeer,a Germany translation theorist, and other scholars develop a new translation theory called Skopos Theory. It refers that the translation process mostly depends on the purpose of the overall translational action.Since translation is a kind of communicative behavior, the target addressees decide this purpose. The author is aware that she needs to take the development of modern Chinese into consideration much more when carrying out the retranslation of O.Henry’s well-known short stories,in addition to revealing the meanings of source language correctly. That is to say,the target language must conform to not only the unique characteristic of O.Henry’s humor but the modern Chinese style. As a result, the author adopts the rule of domestication, along with the translation techniques such as transliteration, annotation and re-adjustment of some long sentence structures. This project helps her to deeply understand the cores of Skopos Theory. Moreover, the author hopes to further improve her translation skills on the basis of this retranslation task.
