As one of the four grottoes in China,Maijishan Grottoes is famous for its exquisite clay figurines,known as the “Oriental Sculpture Exhibition Hall”.However,because of its location in the seismic zone,the grottoes had been seriously damaged by earthquakes many times.In this paper,the total number of earthquake-affected caves in four periods as the research objects is 47,of whom cave 80 and 148 were from the early Northern Wei Dynasty,twenty-six caves of the Northern Wei Dynasty including cave 16 and 17 and seven caves of the Western Wei Dynasty including cave44 and 146 were from the late Northern Wei Dynasty,nine caves including cave 26 and 27 were from the Northern Zhou Dynasty and eight caves including cave 14 and15 were from the Sui Dynasty,which will be compared with other complete caves of the same era,and then to make the restoration concept on the damaged caves which consists of the original form for them,the original image and the composition of the figurines.On this basis,restoring the same look before the collapse of some cliffs,discussing the changes of the landscape of the grottoes caused by previous changes in the trestle path,and making an initial configuration for the digital display of the Maijishan Grottoes,so as to provide effective reference measures for the future protection about it.
