As the fifth novel of Haruki Murakami,Norwegian Wood has sold more than 15 million copies in Japan since its publication in 1987,almost one book for 6-7 people, and it is the largest book sold in Japan. This led to the "Murakami phenomenon"(almost the best-selling novel).China was officially introduced by Lijiang Publishing House in 1989.Only later,Shanghai Translation Publishing House sold more than 4 million copies during its publishing period, and became a phenomenal product in the publishing industry for 18 years. The purpose of this paper is to explore the reasons why Norwegian Wood has been selling well in mainland China and its influence and enlightenment through a case study of Norwegian Wood publishing trajectory in mainland China,so as to provide useful reference for subsequent publishing work and publishing undertakings. This paper mainly adopts the methods of literature research, comparative analysis, statistical analysis and content analysis to sort out the publishing process of Norwegian Wood in all mainland China from 1989 to 2018,analyze industry research, public opinion and published over the years. What is the relationship between Norwegian Wood and how the society’s conception of Norwegian Wood has changed, and which versions are the most widely disseminated and the audiences are the highest. Finally,we can know that Norwegian Wood ’s best-selling is mainly due to two reasons.Internally, its solid text content is the fundamental factor for the best-selling.Externally,the book’s conformity to the times, the author’s continuous attention, the voice of the Nobel Prize for Literature and the focus of the publishing house are all contributing.Norwegian Wood has aroused tremendous heated discussion and reaction in academia, publishing circles and society. The fundamental reason is that it breaks the opposition between elite culture and popular culture. It gives us at least four enlightenments: first,we should have a correct market positioning for books;second, copyright export should be based on localization and globalization;and the third is that pure literary works should strive to explore new ways of marketization. The most important thing is the continued development and excavation of Norwegian Wood. The seventh chapter is the conclusion. These contents can enable readers and other researchers to have a more complete understanding and more detailed understanding of the publishing process and effect of Norwegian Wood in mainland China, which will help follow the publication of the new edition of Norwegian Wood.It can also provide references for other similar works and give the press some inspiration.
