The evolution of language is concerned by large numbers of language learners and researchers. The thesis is a report on the translation of Cognition and Communication in the Evolution of Language,in which two chapters——Chapter 2 and Chapter 3(excerpts)are selected. This book was published in 2017 by Oxford University Press and the book is a study on biolinguistics,a relatively new interdisciplinary subject in domestic academic circle. The source text is academic in style to a large degree. The report can be divided into two main parts, one is the practice of English-Chinese translation and the other is a report on it.In the report, the author chooses Catford's translation shifts theory to guide the practice and solves the problems in the process of translation from four strata, namely, words, phrases, clauses and sentences. For the sake of an easier analysis, the author makes finer classifications of the strata according to part of speech or function and the number of the appeared problems.By the case study, the translator finds that class shifts,structure-shifts and unit shifts are exerted most often. The differences between Chinese and English in the aspects of usage and the habits of expression remain the key reason of translation shifts.Through the translation practice, the translator has acquired further knowledge of biolinguistics and the evolution of language.Meanwhile, she would be gratified if the translation practice would do help to biolinguistic seekers or researchers, providing references and convenience for them.
