As a famous scholar of history and geography in modern China,Chang Chi-yun was not only well-known in academia, but also once held an important position in politics.Chang's progress from academia to politics is not only because of his concept of “knowledge is power”,which influences his learning, but also because of Chiang Kai-shek's trust and value. In the 1930 s,Chang Chi-yun gradually came to the attention of the political circle for his role as a scholar. Then,Chang and Chiang got to know each other by Chen Bulei's introducing.Since then,Chiang gradually developed a favorable impression of Chang, and Chang with his knowledge and interpersonal relationships, continued to gain the attention of the senior Kuomintang officials including Chiang. Before 1949,Chang Chi-yun was known to Chiang, but at that time Chang was a scholar. After the event of “Objection to Chang” in Zhejiang University and when the Kuomintang withdrew from the mainland,Chiang sent an invitation to Chang,so Chang changed his original intention and went to Taiwan, then took up an important position in the Kuomintang and the government.During holding an important post as a party and government official,Chang made every effort to maintain Chiang's authority as a leader and promote policies that in line with Chiang's will, and rarely raised any objection to Chiang's numerous policies.Chiang also supported Chang's policies accordingly. At that time, there was a close relationship between them.In 1958,Chang left his post as “Minister of Education” and later transferred to director of the “Research Institute of Revolutionary Practice” and director of “The National Defense Research Institute”,away from central organization gradually. However, the relationship between Chang Chi-yun and Chiang kai-shek was not alienated.Throughout the relationship between Chang and Chiang,Chen Bulei's introduction,Chiang kai-shek's trust in Chang Chi-yun and Chiang kai-shek's own way of employing people were important, but from the perspective of Chang himself, such as his personality characteristics, his lifelong compliance to Confucianism, his conviction to Chiang in his heart, etc.,was also one of the important reasons for the long-term close relationship between Chang and Chiang.
