The Political Program of Zhen Guan,finished in the period of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang,had been rarely mentioned in the official history of Tang dynasty.Until it became the writing model of the ancestral histories in Song dynasty,it began to receive official attention.It is also from Song dynasty that the main characters of this book Li Shimin,Weizhen and Yang Guang has been viewed as the model of enlightened emperor,expostulators and fatuous emperor,frequently appeared in the monarch-subject dialogues and literature from then on.This essay intends to analyze the character making of the enlightened emperor,fatuous emperor and expostulators,along with their effects and significance,in the guide of the forming process of The Political Program of Zhen Guan.Apart from introduction and conclusion,this essay has four chapters.The introduction points out that historical writing is not always fully objective and accurate.The character making of the enlightened emperor,fatuous emperor and advisors in The Political Program of Zhen Guan reflects author’s distinct direction,purpose and subjective construction,which deserves deep researching.Based on the previous study,there is detailed carding of the time of book completion and presenting.It might be presented to court until July 741 AD.The conclusion is the research summary of this essay.Through the investigation of the compilation background and life of Wujing,the author of The Political Program of Zhen Guan.The first chapter suggests that the recordings of Wujing’s ennobled time in Old Book of Tang and New Book of Tang might be different.This chapter also analyse the spread and influence of The Political Program of Zhen Guan.Since the main material of this essay,The Emendation of The Political Program of Zhen Guan,written by Xie Baozhen,referencing various versions including Chinese,Japanese and Korean versions,there is textual analysis of some content not in the edition.By contrast to other historical records,some of ‘the content not in the edition’ in The Emendation of The Political Program of Zhen Guan came from The advisor recording of Weizhenggong,rather than The Emendation of The Political Program of Zhen Guan.The second chapter contrast the images of Yang Guang in the the Political Program of Zhen Guan and other historical recordings,such as book of Sui,History of Northern Dynasties and Comprehensive Mirror for Aid Government.It could be found that the tyrannical image of Yang Guang as a fatuous emperor started in the book of Sui.Through the further construction of the Political Program of Zhen Guan,this image was settled in Old Book of Tang and Comprehensive Mirror for Aid Government.Constructing Yang Guang’s fatuous emperor image,there were two aims.One was to illustrate the legitimacy of Tang dynasty,the other was to remonstrate current emperor.The third chapter compares the image of Li Shimin inside the the Political Program of Zhen Guan with his image in the historical recordings of the Tang and Song periods outside the The Political Program of Zhen Guan.It proves that the diligent,profound and brilliant image of Li Shimin partly,at least,originated from historical materials splicing.The purpose of Wu Jin’s construction of Li Shimin’s image is to summon a wise emperor of the Empire.This image of wise emperor and its construction were widely recognized and frequently cited by the rulers and officials in the Song Dynasty.This image had also become a paragon for the monarchs of the Jin,Ming and Qing to learn and worship.The forth chapter mainly reviews the records about the expostulators and their expostulations in the Political Program of Zhen Guan,and learns that the image of the expostulatory ministers who are highly respected and trusted by the monarch in the Political Program of Zhen Guan,partly derives from the intercepted historical materials of the Zhen Guan reign.These sorted materials has erased or at least bated the suspicion of the monarch to his courtiers,as well as conflicts of interest among political groups.Thus,the expostulators and the Enlightened Emperor appears in the Political Program of Zhen Guan,compose a paragon of relationship of“君臣道合”between the monarch and the ministers.The construction of this kind of(political)image was accepted and carried on by the monarchs of Song Dynasty while discarded by those of Ming and Qing Dynasties.
