This is a survey of classroom atmosphere in primary English classroom mainly based on through questionnaire survey and supplemented interviews..The classroom atmosphere mentioned here is not physical characteristic of environment,but the social and psychological state.It is found that the English classroom atmosphere experienced by Shanghai pupils is generally good,but there are great differences among different groups of students.Gender,whether or not a student cadre,and English achievement are the three factors that have the most extensive influence on the feeling of classroom atmosphere;while grade,school type and other indirect factors have a relatively limited impact.Based on further analysis the author finds that the teacher’s belief of teaching,the approach of teaching evaluation,and the pressure of education system are the deep reasons that really affect the classroom atmosphere.Finally,the author puts forward some suggestions to improve classroom atmosphere: establishment of teacher-student relationship,the building effective classroom activity routines,enhancing open and active understanding of teaching and evaluation,more and active support from schools,home-school cooperation and parent-child communication.
