Scholars are increasingly concerned with the place of cultural routes within world heritage sites, owing to the undoubted significance of the Silk Roads. The Route Network of the Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor was added to the World Heritage List in June 2014,and this reflects the increasing heritage value that has been afforded to cultural routes since the start of the 21 st century.Throughout this unique cultural route,Buddhist culture plays a singularly important role as one of the representatives on the Silk Road.Buddhist grottoes are the best heritage to show the Buddhist culture on this route. This research project seeks to analyse the landscape of Buddhist grottoes in Gansu on the Silk Road.It will select some cases of grottoes that have been joined the World Heritage Lists in Gansu to analyze their unique landscape value. Then this project will address the distribution, environment, culture, landscape and contemporary conservation of Buddhist grottoes, within Gansu. Finally,it proceeds to consider the implications of such a route being given world heritage status,in both conservation and humanistic terms, which can provide the solid foundation for the conservation of grottoes in Gansu in the future.
