Abstract/Summary:
Interpreting of metaphoric expression is always a headache in that the interpreter ought to represent not only the concept, but also the implied meaning.Hence,a glimpse into the nature of metaphor is of substantial significance for the interpreter to convey the speaker’s real intention.Proposed by Sperber and Wilson,Relevance Theory provides a sound account on the relationship between cognition and communication and,by manifesting convincing compatibility with the nature of translation, plays as a framework for the study of the interpreting of metaphoric expressions.Taking the example of a simulated Chinese-English interpreting of speeches delivered by the chief leaders of the State Council Information Office of the PRC,this thesis puts interpreting cases of Chinese metaphoric expressions under the horizon of Relevance Theory, probes into the double ostensive-inferential processes of the interpreting, and finally summarizes two interpreting strategies: image-retaining and conversion, with the latter further classified into image-replacing and non-metaphor.This research is expected to help the interpreter gain a deeper understanding of the cognitive mechanism in interpreting metaphoric expressions and offer some guidance for the selection of interpreting strategies according to specific contexts.
