Having translated The Dominant Man,a popular sociological work, the present author, ponders upon retrospectively all the pros and cons while revising his version.Summarizing his experience and learning from Yan Fu,a forerunner in the translation of sociological works,he ventures to propose that to ensure the effective transmission of conceptions of the SL text,Peter Newmark's mode of communicative translation might be adopted in translating such works.Citing examples at levels of word, sentence and text,he argues a reader-oriented TL text is the most desirable one.To grasp the meaning of the original text and the thinking process, the present author in the case analysis firstly gives Version 1 by adopting semantic translation, and then polishes it by employing the mode of communicative translation to yield Version 2which is a reader-oriented TL text.In discussion on the advantages of Version 2 over Version 1,the present author also introduces the strategy of correlative approach to translation.
