As the last ritual of life, funeral is a unique cultural phenomenon.Influenced by the concept of Animism and Tibetan Buddhism, the Mongolian funeral rituals have both Buddhist and national characteristics. In Bayanhaote Town,Alashan League,Inner Mongolia, the Mongolian funeral has a set of complete system including pre-determination instruments, specific instruments after dying, instruments for burial, and post-burial matters. The entire Mongolian funeral ceremony is a ‘ rites of passage'.The deceased and the living will go through threshold,in other words they will experience the significant change of status in society during the ceremony. In this process, the deceased gets a new identity in the heaven and the living returns to their daily lives with special way of connection with the deceased. In addition to the farewell, the function of the funeral ceremony enhances the cohesiveness of the group and educates the next generation in traditionally cultural way.The Mongolian funeral ceremony has changed under the influence of the grazing prohibition policy and urbanization, but its overall framework has been stable for a long time, and the specific content will continue to be enriched. In this article, firstly I introduced Bayanhot Town and the local Mongolian's multi-religious status and their view of life and death. Then,I recorded their funeral ritual process and analyzed the threshold state of the deceased and the living in the ceremony with the concept of ‘ rites of passage'.The most important thing is I try to understand all the symbols behind the funeral to enrich Turner's threshold theory. Finally,I discussed the functional changes of the funeral in the new era and new forms.
