In 2016,on the 400 th anniversary of Shakespear's death,Hogarth Publishing House prepared the Shakespeare rewriting project: on the basis of original works, let writers rewrite Shakespeare's theatre into novels,to help public people more close to classical leterature, and to make them reinterest in traditional Shakespeare's theatre.Four famous writers join in this project, they'll keep Shakespeare's essence but base on the modern society rewrite four theatres of Shakespeare's works into fictions.Among them,Jeanette Winterson rewrites The Winter's Tale into The Gap of Time;Anne Tyler rewrites The Taming of the Shrew into Vinegar Girl;Margret Atwood rewrites The Tempest into Hag-Seed;Howard Jacobson rewrites The Merchant of Venice into Shylock is My Name. This paper will discuss the inheritance and innovation of rewriting novels to Shakespeare's threatres, and explore the significance of innovation, showing the charm and practical value of classical rewriting novels. This paper includes three parts: introduction, text and conclusion. The introduction part gives a brief account of the reasons for choosing the topic, summarizes the research status of Hogarth's Shakespeare's rewriting fiction and historical Shakespeare's rewriting fiction at home and abroad, and finally discusses the research methods and contents of this paper.Text part consists of four parts: The first chapter mainly explores the rewriting of Shakespeare's theatres in history and introduces the four rewriting novels of the four theatres,to explore their historical origins and clarifies the significance of the rewriting of the classical literature. In chapter two, mainly discusses the inheritance of Shakespeare's theatres from the rewriting novels of four writers by using intertextuality theory. This part is divided into two sections: the first section explores the inheritance of the creative theme of love and forgiveness in rewriting novels;thesecond section is named the inheritance of literary image,it analyses the influence of literary image in Shakespeare's theatres on the image in the new rewriting fiction. The paper chooses two representative images of protagonist image creation and world image creation to study,in order to explore the literary image inherit in four novels. The third chapter mainly analyses the innovation of rewriting novels compared with Shakespeare's theatres. This chapter uses the theory of morphology of the folk tale and narratology to show the innovation of rewriting novels from two aspects: the change of role function and type, and narrative mode.Chapter Four explains the practical significance of rewriting fiction.Based on the theory of modernity and combining the writers' personal experience and living environment, this chapter explains the reasons why writers create rewriting fiction from two aspects: gender consciousness and loneliness in modern society. The conclusion reiterates the significance and value of this study, reiterates the inheritance and innovation of the four writers to Shakespeare's traditional theatres, reveals the unique charm of rewriting the novel, and expects the inheritance of classical texts at present. It is hoped that the study of Shakespeare's theatres and Hogarth's project rewriting of Shakespeare's novels in this paper will inspire the inheritance of classical texts in Chinese literature and the world literature,so that the connotation and spirit of classical works can be rediscovered in modern society and public can keep longing disire for classical literature.
