An Analysis Of Host's Identity Construction From Cooperative Principle

The concept of identity was originally a philosophical category,which means the same form in the dynamic changing or the same issue in distinction,for example the law of identity.It is a kind of orientation for others and the self in social environment.In addition,identity is the pragmatic element in language communication which should be studied from specific contexts.At present,most research on the identity construction was carried out based on the cognitive theory,and there is little research on identity language in the practical application.Based on this,this paper attempts to extend further study on identity types and identity language from pragmatic perspective,and show the research value from a practical perspective.Based on cooperative principle,this thesis applies qualitative method to study identity construction.It chooses Ellen Show as the single data base.During the study,the thesis intends to answer the following questions: 1.What kind of host identity has been constructed through the observation? 2.How are these identities constructed from different pragmatic levels? 3.How is the cooperation principle used in identity construction? Based on Chen Xinren's identity construction practice type,the thesis chose ten programs from the Ellen Show and explored the host identity type and strategy in the changed environment and the relationship with cooperative principle at different language levels(including vocabulary,syntax,and text level)and non language level.After analysis,the research showed that the host identity in Ellen Show can be divided into macro identity and micro identity.The macro identity belongs to institutional identity,and micro identity belongs to individual identity.The macro identity is stable but micro identity is flexible which would change in different situations.The macro identity is more stable than micro identity in the use of language either at vocabulary,sentence,and text levelor at non language level.However,for the latter,it is diversified in the application at language level and non language level.In addition,the discourse indicating identity basically obeys the maxim of cooperation principle such as the maxim of quality,relevant and manner.In comparison,the utterance in the show always violates the maxim of quantity especially when the host acted as the guide of program.Therefore,this study not only makes analysis on identity of discourse from a pragmatic angle,but spreads the research field of cooperative principle which is of certain value and significance.
