Calligraphic art played a critical role in ancient Chinese culture and art and has enjoyed a high position next only to politics, culture and education. In the times in which Wu Lu lived, calligraphic art had become the reflection of superb techniques after undergoing the impact of stone inscription study during the reigns of Emperors Qianlong and Jiaqing(1735-1820)in Qing Dynasty. As an outstanding figure from Fujian Province,Wu Lu boasted of abundant calligraphic works. However, the impression he left on later generations is that he is more of an educator, patriotic poet and forerunner of reform in modern Chinese school system. It is natural that Wu Lu looks greater and more honorable as a patriotic poet than he does as a calligrapher. One simple reason is that,as a patriotic poet, his sedulous pursuit for new learning and his image set off by patriotic poetry seem brighter, whereas he will appear as a more general literatus wearing the hat of a calligrapher. This study looks at Wu Lu from multiple aspects, including his life stories, the historical background, the calligraphic style of his time and his personality accomplishment and presents systematic analysis of his extant works like calligraphic works and stone inscriptions, thereby investigating his calligraphic style and revealing his extraordinary calligraphic attainments. |
