| Margaret Atwood,one of the prominent female writers in Canada and even the world,has won many literary awards such as the Booker Prize.MaddAddam trilogy,which was lately published,has attracted great attention of scholars and readers because it describes vividly the macabre female predicaments and disasters possibly faced by humanity in the future,which go directly to their hearts.Previous studies on female survival in Atwood's novels were mainly taken from the perspective of Feminism.They ignore ecological values and multiple connections between women and nature.Under the guidance of Karen J.Warren's Eco-Feminism,this thesis carries out a systemic exploration of female survival in Atwood's MaddAddam trilogy.The social and natural predicaments faced by female characters are firstly analyzed to find that social predicaments are caused by technocracy,meritocracy and Androcentrism,and natural predicaments are caused by Anthropocentrism.Furthermore,the different choices women have made to tackle their living predicaments and corresponding results are compared and contrasted:compromise leads to degradation or even death while revolt leads to freedom.According to Warren's oppressive conceptual framework,women compromise owing to“power-over”,revolt “power-against”.Whereafter,the liberated women save other people and heal the broken world through cooperating with men,which reveals necessity and importance of female independence and gender cooperation.In MaddAddam Trilogy,Atwood not only criticizes severely oppression and exploitation of nature and women done by the system of patriarchal society,but also calls for female fight for their final freedom and bliss.The writer advocates that women should achieve financial independence to improve their competence,liberate their thoughts to gain freedom and cooperate with men to achieve harmonious coexistence.These notions enlighten the development tendency of feminist movement and sound the alarm for human future as well. |
