Based on the translation of Modernity and Meaning in Victorian London written by Joseph De Sapio, the report summarizes the translation problems and translation techniques used during the translation process. The source text is a typical historical text, which describes and studies how London influenced the identity, political life and cultural development of people in British colonies from the perspective of visitors to London in the 19 th century.Besides,a lot of conceptual metaphors carrying historical information and reflecting literary features are employed in the source text. This report mainly summarizes the translation of ontological metaphor, orientational metaphor and structural metaphor. The rich types and special functions of conceptual metaphors used in the source text bring difficulties of expression in target language. Therefore, the transmission of information and emotion should be taken into account, and the rhetorical effect in the source text should be reproduced so as to meet the needs of target readers. In view of this, such translation techniques as shift, extension and addition are employed so as to fluently and accurately transmit information, and to be in consistent with the Chinese expression habits. The translation practice gives the translator a better understanding towards each part of the translation task.Besides,it consolidates and strengthens the translator's translation competence, and lays a solid foundation for future translation practice. It is expected that this translation report can provide some references to the personnel specializing in historical text translation.
