This is a report on E-C subtitling of film Pulp Fiction. This film is directed by Quentin Tarantino,an American postmodernist director. It stands out as one of the notable landmarks of this director's career.Pulp Fiction reproduces the real social scenes in United States. The film depicts a large number of gangster scenes with many characters and complex relationships.Ubiquitous proverbs, swearwords and different cultural elements cause many translation problems. The requirements of this task include three points.Firstly, the translation should be concise and clear, maximizing the information contained in the dialogues in a limited number of words.Secondly, using various translation strategies to guide the audience and minimize the cultural barriers in the subtitles for the audience.Thirdly, the translator needs to accurately grasp the relationships and emotions of characters as well as the real meaning of their words so that the translation can reflect the true feeling and fully show the charm of the movie.Based on the analysis of the characteristics of the source text, the requirements of the clients and the extra-linguistic factors of adaptation theory, this report focuses on the how the translation strategies used in this task to achieve a good translation and satisfy the target audience. In the first chapter, the report introduces the background and significance of the task. Then three characteristics of the original text are analyzed in the second chapter, that is,time and space constraints, colloquialism and abundant cultural elements. In the third chapter, the translator's translation process is introduced, including pre-translation,translating and post-translation.The adaptation theory is reviewed in this part.It is hoped that the physical, psychological and social adaptation would be the goal of the translation effects, which can help to satisfy the audience's demand for subtitles.Based on the characteristics of the text, the translation strategies used in the translation process are analyzed in the fourth chapter. In the last chapter, the major findings and limitations have been summarized in order to give some references for similar source texts.
