Susan Sontag(January 16.1933-December 28,2004)is known both as a brilliant critic and as an active participant in politics in the public sphere.With criticize and creative ability,the ability to judge and the talent for empathy,Sontag plays both a participant and a critic throughout the modern art,which focuses on artistic innovation."Sensibilitv",on the one hand,is the basic condition for the aesthetic subject to realize its individualization,germinate and enhance the aesthetic experience of creativity and imagination.On the other hand,it acts as a central factor in the effectiveness of various regulatory mechanisms in the historical and social context.In modern society,art is branded by vulgar sensibility,creation and critical discourse become appendages of consumerism.It is in the face of this dilemma that modern art starts its own process,which is also the reason why it is characterized by aesthetic resistance."New Sensibility"arises at this historic moment.Never one to be trapped in a small room,Sontag withdrew from the art museums and devoted much of her energy and enthusiasm to public politics,a constant engagement that lasted until the eve of her death.Both the critical practice and the political practice embody the aesthetics and moralism,the aesthetic value and ethical value,the beauty and ethics and their inseparability that Sontag herself insists on and believes in,and the "New Sensibility"she herself spares no effort to promote runs through it.The main part of the paper discusses the "New Sensibility" from the perspective of the function and responsibility of art.according to Sontag's two clues:critical and political practice,respectively,to arrange the focus of the paper.In terms of critical practice,this paper discusses the function of art.which specifically involves the renewal of the three categories of style.content and form under the "New Sensibility",and emphasizes the interaction and permeability between "New Sensibility" and art.In terms of political practice,this paper takes photography as the entry point to discuss the responsibility and potential of art under the "New Sensibility" within the condition of modernity,as well as the relationship between art and subjectivity.Sontag's practice starts from the production mechanism of culture and art,and appeals to the potential political nature of cultural criticism.A modernist who did not believe in "modernity",Sontag did not seek a universal vision,nor did she establish a complete set of theories.She reveals,criticizes,and has scrutinized all the so-called "banal representation system" that have emerged in the face of "universal myths".It is in this sense that she is called the"antidote" to modernism.And we also believe that Sontag has left a legacy for criticism as well as for critics:a frame of reference for thinking and acting.Let criticism not be drowned in the eternal cycle of historical consciousness,reduced to a mechanical development,or a mean fashion.
