| This is a project report on the translation focusing on the chosen part from Our War With Spain For Cuba’s Freedom,one of the American narrative non-fiction works written by Trumbull White.In an objective and contemplative language style,this book visualizes heroic struggles of Cuban insurgents for the nation’s independence during the Spanish-American War.In recent years,many excellent foreign narrative non-fiction works have emerged in Chinese market.As translators,however,we must learn how to balance the literary and informative features when those works are translated into Chinese,and to reproduce the story of this war for domestic readers.Currently,it is necessary to study non-fiction works since there are few systematic studies on the translation of those works.This report aims to provide domestic readers with detailed historical records of the Spanish-American War.The translation of this book deals with various proper nouns including names for places and people and military terms.Therefore,difficulties in this translation lie in the challenge that military expressions should be translated to avoid ambiguity,and truth of war should be revealed with objective words.In view of the literary and informative features of non-fiction works,this report tries to accurately transfer military information of the original text and reproduce the war-related style of the language by adopting translation skills including conversion,division and shifting in the light of Newmark’s translation theory of text type.Finally,the author comes to the conclusion that the translator must study the background knowledge by making full use of network and find appropriate explanations of specific words according to the context.At the same time,the translator should be allowed to make appropriate adjustments to the translation when the form and content cannot be properly translated,so as to establish a close relationship between the translation and Chinese readers. |
