Vocabulary is the premise and foundation of foreign language learning.At present,in the study of the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and language skills,most researchers pay more attention to the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension.The participants are mainly college students,and the research on the relationship between English vocabulary knowledge and listening comprehension of junior high school students is quite insufficient.Based on this,the thesis discusses the relationship between vocabulary breadth knowledge,vocabulary depth knowledge and listening comprehension of junior high school students.Based on the previous studies on the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and listening comprehension,this thesis takes junior high school students as the participants and aims to answer the following questions:(1)What is the overall level of English vocabulary knowledge and listening comprehension among junior high school students? Are there any gender differences?(2)How is the breadth and depth of vocabulary knowledge related to the general performance of listening comprehension and the specific performance in listening tests?(3)Are there differences in students’ listening comprehension at different levels of vocabulary knowledge?Firstly,the author conducted vocabulary breadth,vocabulary depth knowledge and listening comprehension test on the respondents.Secondly,the author used SPSS19.0 statistical software to conduct independent sample T test,one-way ANOVA and correlation analysis on the test data,which further explored the vocabulary breadth and vocabulary depth of junior high school students.The author combined the quantitative analysis of the test volume data and the qualitative analysis of the interviews,and drew the following conclusions:(1)On the whole,the participants’ level of vocabulary knowledge is not bad.The mastery of the breadth of receptive vocabulary is better than that of the depth knowledge of vocabulary.The general performance of the participants’ listening comprehension is ranked in the upper level.There are gender differences in vocabulary knowledge and listening comprehensionof the participants,and the results of the surveyed girls are all higher than those of the surveyed boys.(2)There is a correlation between vocabulary breadth knowledge,vocabulary depth knowledge and total listening scores which include sentence comprehension,long and short dialogue,short text comprehension,and information conversion.(3)The difference on listening comprehension among different levels of vocabulary knowledge is very significant.The author found a positive correlation between vocabulary knowledge and listening comprehension.In other words,the higher the level of vocabulary knowledge,the higher the scores of listening comprehension.In view of the above findings,combining the current situation of junior high school English vocabulary and listening teaching,the author put forward the following suggestions:(1)Teachers should guide students to establish a correct vocabulary learning concept.(2)Teachers should appropriately improve the vocabulary teaching method in light of the basic situation of students,focusing on uniting quality and quantity of vocabulary.(3)Teachers should improve listening teaching and cultivate students’ listening interests to improve listening skills.(4)Teachers and students should pay more attention to the complementarity of vocabulary and listening.
