Animated Film Subtitle Translation From The Perspective Of Eco-Translatology

With the rapid development of economy and motion picture and video technology,more and more foreign films and TV series,especially American films and TV series have been introduced into China in the past few years.Many Chinese audiences show great interest in watching American films and TV series.Therefore,subtitle translation is becoming more and more important in translation studies and has gradually formed a new research field.However,the development of subtitle translation research is slow compared with that of American films and TV series,because people pay more attention to American films and TV series that are more attractive.After a long period of development,the theoretical framework of subtitle translation is gradually formed and becomes more comprehensive.In recent years,the animated films have become very popular in China and there are some researches about subtitle translation of animated films based on the theory of subtitle translation.These researches have not formed a systematic theory framework,so the scholars who have interest in this aspect should pay more attention to the research.Hu Gengshen,a professor at Tsinghua University,put forward Eco-translatology.Based on the "natural selection" and "survival of the fittest"of Darwin's Theory of Evolution,Professor Hu proposed the approach of adaptation and selection in translation as the core idea of this theory.Translational eco-environment is very important in this theory,which refers to the translation system that consists of the source language environment,the source text environment and the target language environment.The translator should make adaptation and selection to fit to the translational eco-environment.The approach of this theory is three-dimeinsional transformations,that is,linguistic dimension,cultlural dimension and communicative dimension.The translator should make adaptive selection and transformation from the three dimensions in translation.In a word,Eco-translatology is a new theory that can be applied to animated film subtitle translation.It is hoped that it can provide some different and innovative directions for the research.Zootopia is a famous animated film,and applying the theory of Eco-translatology to the research of animated film subtitle translation is relatively new.In this thesis,the author makes a case study about the subtitle translation of this film from the perspective of Eco-translatology.Descriptive method is used here to explain the theory of Eco-translatology and the translation strategies of the subtitles in this film.First,the thesis discusses the source language environment,the source text environment and the target language environment in detail.Then,this thesis makes a case study and analyzes the translator's adaptive selection and transformation to the translational eco-environment from the three dimensions with some unique subtitle translation cases in this film.It is hoped that this thesis can provide a new point for research on the animated film subtitle translation and be a supplement for the current research of this aspect.
