Attitude can reflect the main emotional tone and value orientation etc.The attitude of a film can reflect the main developmental line of its emotion and plot. The multimodal construction of attitude in a film can show more clear-ly about the multi-dimensional and hierarchical pattern of characters’ identity. The film Warrior Wol.f II brought a strong emotional impact on the audience, created a box office record of Chinese movies, and also caused heated discussions at home and abroad. Therefore, the multimodal analysis of the attitude among the characters in this film can help clarify the emotional resonance mechanism between audience and filmmakers, which can provide valuable reference to the film production industry.Based on the appraisal theory proposed by Martin and White, this paper integrates the multimodal construction frameworks of eliciting conditions of attitude and expressions of attitude proposed by Feng and Qi,and present a simplified framework used for film discourse analysis. Then all the attitudinal resources appearing in the film with the annotation of eliciting conditions of attitude and expressions of attitude are identified.Later quantitative and qualitative methods are both used to compare and analyze the data. The paper aims to investigate the multimodal construction of attitude in film, and further figures out the possible interrelationships between different linguistic and non-linguistic semiotics in constructing effective attitude. This paper consists of seven parts. The first chapter is the introduction of the research background, research purposes, research methods, research significance. The second chapter is the literature review of the status quo of multimodal discourse analysis, appraisal theory as well as film discourse at home and abroad. The third chapter is the theoretical framework, which mainly illustrates Martin and White’s appraisal theory,Feng’s multimodal construction framework of attitudinal meaning and a newly proposed multimodal attitudinal construction framework. The fourth chapter explains data collection,resear-ch methods and research procedures of the paper. The fifth chapter analyzes the realization of different types of attitudes in WARRIOR WOLF II.The sixth chapter analyzes the distribution of eliciting conditions and expressions of attitude of WARRIOR WOLF II.The seventh chapter concludes the major findings, limitations and implications of the research. The research obtains the following major findings.Firstly,it shows that the emotional resources of affect in this film are far richer than that of judgment and appreciation, meanwhile appreciation usually functions as an ancillary part to affect construction.Secondly, the ways of presentation of attitude expression in the film are more diverse than those of eliciting conditions, and the eliciting conditions and expressions of affect are much more diverse than those of judgment and appreciation.Thirdly,non-linguistic and linguistic semiotics of attitudinal resources, such as the utterance, postures, gestures, expressions and actions often work together to express attitude. They mainly supplement, contrast and parallel with each other.Lastly, all semiotics with attitudinal potential may function differently in different situations.Based on appraisal theory, this paper integrates the multimodal construction frameworks of eliciting conditions of attitude and expressions of attitude respectively, which not only expands the scope of the application of appraisal theory, but also offers a simplified framework of multimodal construction of attitude, which can be applicable to film analysis of attitude. In addition,it may also provide some reference for our film industry.
