| The American New Left movement in the 1960 s was not a complete break from the past, but had its roots buried deep in American radical and pacific traditions while directly inspired by the Civil Rights movement. That being said,it was still a radical rupture from traditional movements. It made a ferocious attack on the modern capitalist American system for bringing alienation,de-personalization and manipulation. To address these issues, the New Left called for participatory democracy and radical consciousness revolution. The New Left movement was manifested in the progressive battles of the feminists, homosexuals and dropouts which were a part of the radical movement but kept their own features. While the New Left disappeared out of the social scene in the 70 s,it left an indelible imprint on American politics and culture: it compelled the American forces to withdraw from the Vietnam War,it shattered the public’s trust in the American government and system,it paved the way for grassroots movements and it brought lighthearted changes in today’s fashion and music. |
