The Construction Of The Subjective Consciousness Of Football Liaison Interpreters

With the issuing the General Plan for Chinese Football Reform and Development,foreign exchanges in the field of campus football are increasing,and the role of football liaison interpreters is becoming increasingly important.This thesis employs both case study and empirical research in order to analyze how football liaison interpreters should give play to their subjectivity.The discourses in case study are transcribed from the Chinese Football Coaches Training Program in the UK from June to September 2018,and the FA International License Coach Training Course in Chengdu from March to April 2019.This thesis also designs questionnaires for Chinese campus football coaches,and interviews for professional interpreters in order to conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis.This thesis aims to answer the following two questions:(1).How is the subjectivity of the football liaison interpreter constructed?(2).How should football liaison interpreters define their roles through comparing different perceptions of the subjective consciousness of users and interpreters.The thesis reveals two main findings:(1)The subj ectivity of the liaison interpreter is constructed by gatekeeping information,contributing discourse and directly exercising power.The liaison interpreters should respect users' willingness before participate in cross culture communication and discourse framework construction.(2)Most interpreters and users encourage interpreters to give full play to subjective consciousness.Therefore,interpreters are required to devote more passion,resolve conflicts,use non-verbal communication and even have their own voice if necessary.However,they are also subject to social norms and professional ethics and should strike a balance between "total invisibility" and "excessive visibility".Finally,the thesis proposes a few suggestions for football liaison interpreters,hoping to provide guidance for the training of future football interpreters.
