Pomp and Circumstance Marches(Op.39,No.1)is composed by the famous British composer,Edward Elgar,in the height of his music career.As one of his music masterpieces,it shows the special British national spirit and transmits the spirit of the era,which gives its representative and researchable value.With the research background of musical environment of Britain between the end of 19th century and the beginning of 20th century,this paper makes an academic analysis on the British national spirit and social influence that it brings,based on great changes in British cultural ideological trend at the time.For this purpose,we adopt many effective research methods,including the method of literature survey,historical research,and comparative study,under sociological-aesthetic bidirectional research perspectives.On the one hand,investigate the reasons why this music work can get the sense of identity of the British royal household and the public from studying direct and indirect impacts that it has on them.On the other hand,combine with three music creative elements containing the design of the melody,the royal image shaping,and musical instruments application,to analyze how this music work can achieve the collective identity of British society.In addition,for deeply understanding the topic of the thesis,we also attempt to analyze the national character it containing,epoch characteristic it transmiting,and its social appeal reflected by the integration of both through appreciating the sense of music ritual that results from the influence of royal household,and the spirit of the British royal household it embodied,showing at the finale,Land of Hope and Glory.
