Education Studies: An Issue Based Approach,published in 2014 and co-authored by Will Curtis,Stephen Ward,John Sharp and Les Hankin,is a very popular book on education studies in UK.As an informative text,it explores different issues related to various education themes.The translator selects Chapter 15,19,and 20 as her translating materials,covering three themes: special education needs and the question of inclusive education,comparative education and global citizenship education.While translating such kind of informative texts,the translator should place emphasis on the information transmission and the authenticity,accuracy and readability of the article should also be paid attentions to.This report is mainly composed of four parts: task description,translation process,case study and conclusion.According to the characteristics of informative texts,the translator analyzes and discusses problems and solutions in the translation practice from lexical,syntactic and textual levels following the guidance of Peter Newmark‘s communicative translation theory.At lexical level,the translator adopts literal translation and determines words meaning according to context to deal with the difficulties in translating proper nouns and professional terms.At syntactical level,the long and complicated sentence is a great challenge for the translator.Through the analysis of the types of long and complicated sentences,the translator applies translation methods including linear translation,inverse translation,splitting and restructuring.At textual level,conjunctions are added to where necessary and words repetition is used in order to make sure the accuracy and readability of the target text.Finally,the author makes a summary to the report on three aspects: reflections on the translation practice,limitations of the translation and implications for future translation and study.
