Student interpreters use different types of materials to practice with within and out of class. This paper adopts the theory of classification and characteristics of interpretation training materials proposed by Zhang Jiliang.Zhang(2017)holds that training materials can be divided into four categories:class speeches,audio,tape-recording and video materials.Audio and video materials are two of the most commonly used materials.Considering the development of the internet, the application of multimedia in teaching and the students’practice in consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, this research will focus on the empirical study of student interpreters’ performance in the early stage of simultaneous interpreting study(C-E)using audio and video materials. The purpose of this paper is to identify the relations between the use of audio and video materials and student interpreters’ performance.Based on the above analyses, the paper forms a hypothesis for the simultaneous interpreting(C-E)experiment:In the early stage of simultaneous interpreting(C-E)learning,the use of audio and video materials has effects on students’ performance which is better under video materials. This study combines quantitative and qualitative methods to reveal the relations between the use of two materials and student interpreters’ performance. It also adopts the interpreting performance evaluation criteria proposed by Yang Chengshu to assess the performance of 8 student interpreters in this experiment. The study shows that the use of audio and video materials has effects on students’ translation results.Students at an early stage of simultaneous interpreting(C-E)learning would perform better under video materials.
