In recent years, many aspects of the Chinese culture have become more and more popular in the west, especially Chinese Kung Fu.To introduce Chinese culture through this channel,Jin Yong's classic martial arts novels must not be neglected. His novels show a strong flavour of the "Xiayi(??)" spirit, which is the essence of his works, and one of the key points considering the translation of his works. However, only three of Jin Yong's fifteen novels have been translated into English. And among all the relevant studies, just a few touched upon the issue of the "Xiayi"spirit, yet their explorations into this issue don't seem to be deep enough. Therefore, the thesis would like to dig into the issue. The thesis decided to compare two translations of Jin Yong's She Diao Ying Xiong Zhuan(???????):one by Anna Holmwood in 201 8,and the other by fans on the internet;both translations are well-received.The thesis analysed how the two versions translated the "Xiayi"spirit from the perspective of cultural translation, and briefly discussed the factors that led to their different translation choices. The thesis found that compared to the fans' version,Holmwood's version depicted the "Xiayi" spirit more accurately;her story-telling is more fluent and natural;and she also omitted more segments of the work. There are basically three factors behind the phenomena.First,Holmwood's Chinese and English are better than the fans.Second,as an experienced translator,Holmwood is more professional when choosing translation strategies.Third, the two translations serve different groups of people:Holmwood's target readers are the general readers who have little knowledge of the martial arts culture;the fans translated for the martial arts community, whose members are already familiar with the culture, more or less. The thesis also discussed a new way to translate the "Xiayi" spirit in the hope that it may help future researchers in terms of introducing martial arts culture by its translation.
