Vocabulary acquisition is an important part in second language acquisition.Incidental vocabulary acquisition is regarded as the main approach of acquiring a large number of vocabularies.In second language acquisition,incidental vocabulary acquisition is influenced by many factors,such as learners’ vocabulary and reading ability.Therefore,many researchers attempt to explore methods,which can promote incidental vocabulary acquisition through the second language reading.In recent years,many researches explore which gloss method is more effective in the study of glosses.The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of different glosses on incidental vocabulary acquisition through reading for Chinese senior high school students.This study aims to provide teachers with a new approach to vocabulary teaching.Teachers can use different types of glosses to improve the incidental vocabulary acquisition rate for different English levels of learners.Certainly,it also can develop students’ self-learning ability.This study mainly answers the following three questions:(1)Are there any significant differences in incidental vocabulary acquisition among the three different glosses(single English glosses,Chinese plus English glosses,and multiple-choice English glosses)in the immediate test?(2)Are there any significant differences on vocabulary retention in the delayed test?(3)What is the attitude of students towards different glosses? In this study,three parallel classes of grade one are selected to participate in this experiment.These include reading comprehension test,instant test,delayed test,and interview.For test results,this experiment uses SPSS in the one-way ANOVA and Excel software for data processing.The results of the interview are collected to the enlightenment of experiment.The experimental results show that gloss is necessary for incidental vocabulary acquisition in teaching reading.In immediate test,the effect of multiple-choice English gloss is better than single English gloss and Chinese plus English gloss.In the delayed test,Chinese and English gloss is more helpful to language learners’ vocabulary retention.As for the attitude towards three different glosses,most of students prefer Chinese and English glosses.And there are few students choose single English glosses and multiple-choice English glosses.
