Study Of "Words In The Grace Hall" By Wang Renyu

The "Words in the Grace Hall" as a literary sketches by Wang Renyu,the writer in the Late Tang Five Dynasties,is a reflection of broad social life and local customs at that time.The novel is very rich in contents,and many stories are circuitous and artistry and have produced a far-reaching impact on the novels of later generations."Words in the Grace Hall,is so valuable that it has been concerned by many scholars,and relevant discussions on "Words in the Grace Hall" by Zhou Xunchu and Pu Xiangming,et al.have laid a solid foundation for its subsequent research."Words in the Grace Hall" is not only of literary value,but a broad space for research.So based on previous ones its further study seems necessary.The paper consists of five chapters:Chapter 1 is mainly on Wang Renyu's life and the name meaning of the"Words in the Grace Hall." Historical documents show that“Wang Renyu has created about ten thousand poems."If it is true,Wang Renyu can be said the poet of the most number of poem creation in the Late Tang Five Dynasties.In this chapter,both the truth of this statement and the subjective and objective reasons for his rich works are tried to analyze.The name "Words in the Grace Hall" not only means a lot,but investigating to its implication can understand the impact of his unique experience on the creation of the "Words in the Grace Hall,"that is,Wang Renyu as a Hanlin Academician,his special political identity has not only impacted him on naming the novel,but a rich materials to it.Chapter 2 is on the discussion of the feature of "Words in the Grace Hall" in view of a historical book because lots of its interpretations were deeply influenced by the historical biography and such a narrative style basically remained with important value of historical data.Because these features of the novel have been discussed previously,this chapter is mainly on the representation of the“Words in the Grace Hall" as the historical data and why in such a representation which has been rarely studied before.Chapter 3 is chiefly on the relationship between "Words in the Grace Hall"and social reality of Later Tang Five Dynasties and deep analysis on national relations of that time combined with the historical record.Han nationality in the Central Plains and the Northern minorities had either fierce wars or exchanges and fusions.In addition,"Words in the Grace Hall" had also reflected Wang Renyu's view of Han and other nationalities and his strong awareness of national crisis.Chapter 4 is on the distinctive nature of stories of "Words in the Grace Hall,"which is reflected by its apparent fiction that,at the same time concerning the daily life of the ordinary being,various art skills were used for shaping figures with flexural and complete plot developing.In chapter 5,the wide and rich satirical art in "Words in the Grace Hall" is discussed.Wang Renyu' s critical words were as sharp as the weapon not only on the popinjay but on the religion and all levels of the social patterns.His novel disclosed vividly and implicitly various sorts of social evils of that time.Besides,the author was good at skills of contrast,detailing and line drawing,and humorous descriptions,which not only made it read satirical but truth,fine and interesting.
