Junior middle school English learning mainly includes four skills: listening,speaking,reading and writing.Among them,listening is in the first place,which shows its importance.But in daily teaching practice,listening is a more difficult lesson for both teachers and students.According to the survey data,there are many factors that affect the level of English listening,such as the ill-founded knowledge of language,the weak ability of discriminating word,inauthentic input language material,and lack of listening skills and language background knowledge.As a more authentic language material in English and American countries,English songs are filled with authentic English and American cultures.Applying English songs to listening teaching,especially its beautiful melody can attract students' attention,stimulate students' interest in listening,and improve students' listening level.This research is based on Gardner's Multiple Intelligences Theory,Krashen's language input theory and Krashen's Affective Filter Hypothesis,trying to bring English songs into junior middle school English listening teaching,designing a teaching mode in which English songs are applied to listening teaching.This teaching mode mainly has three stages: pre-listening,while-listening,post-listening.In the pre-listening,the teacher plays the song for the first time,and explains the background knowledge of the song and the meaning of the lyrics.In the while-listening,the teacher plays the song for the second time,and analyzes the lyrics and teaches vocabulary knowledge,phonetic knowledge and grammar knowledge of lyrics.In the post-listening,the teacher guides students to discuss and learn to sing songs.It emphasizes the interaction between teacher and students,and gives full play to the enthusiasm and initiative of students.This study focuses on three issues:(1)Does the application of English songs to English listening teaching help to stimulate junior middle school students' interest in learning English listening?(2)Does the application of English songs to English listening teaching improve junior middle school students' listening level?(3)Does the application of English songs to English listening teaching extend junior middle school students' language background knowledge?In order to verify the effectiveness of this listening teaching method,in this study,the research object is 120 seventh-grade students selected from Zhengzhou No.1 Middle School.The experiment class takes English songs as teaching materials for the listening teaching,while the control class adopts the traditional listening teaching method.After one semester,by comparing and analyzing the experimental data,the conclusion could be made: as a kind of listening material,English songs can help students to stimulate their listening interests,improve their listening performance,and contributing to broadening their language background knowledge.Due to the short experimental period,the progress of each student is not obvious,but the improvement of the intermediate-level students is more significant.Finally,based on the conclusion of this study,the author gets some inspirations in listening teaching,such as,choosing sound and positive songs,conforming to teaching principles.Applying English songs to listening teaching can provide students with a more effective learning method and provide the reference and instruction for teachers to improve listening teaching.
