Abstract/Summary:
Based on frame theory, this thesis aims to analyze the frame operations in cultural image translation. The cultural images are chosen from Chinese-English translations of Guofeng separately by Wang Rongpei and James Legge.“Cultural Image” refers to the imagery featured literary phenomena in literary works. Many scholars put forward that the transformation of cultural image should become a specific question in literary translation.Frame operations in translation is divided into two categories: idealized and non-idealized.Idealized frame operation refers to the two cultures could correspond with each other, while the non-idealized frame operation means the two cultures are different from each other.By using the qualitative research,on the basis of two different frame operations, this thesis analyzes the different types of cultural images in GuoFeng. This thesis classifies the cultural images in Guo Feng into four types: natural cultural image, material cultural image, appellative cultural image and social cultural image and analyzes these typical cultural images in order to explain their frame operations. This thesis tries to answer three questions: 1)How do the translators implement cognitive frame operations in translating cultural images? 2)What are the differences between translators from different cultural backgrounds in the frame operation of cultural images in Guofeng? 3)What factors affect the translator’s different frame operations on the translation of cultural images in GuoFeng? The results show that translators decode the source cultural image frame and then draws the target image close to the corresponding one.In order to make the target reader share the same reactions with the source readers,if there are the corresponding images in target culture, the translator prefers to keep them in translation;otherwise, the translator would change the source cultural frames in different ways, which includes replace, delete or add frame components and change the whole frame. The different expressions of the same cultural image are caused by different frame operations. There are the findings in the present study by comparing the two translated texts of Guofeng. As for different translators, the same cultural images activate different frame operations, and corresponding translators’ expressions in target language will be constrained by different factors.Wang Rongpei could grasp the essential connotations of the poetry because he knows more about the source culture and prefers to adjust the frame hierarchy or replace the frame component in order to convey the spirit of the cultural images. While James Legge is more likely to add frame elements to the source images or annotate the images for corresponding the source cultural image frames. The translators are affected mainly by their culture background information. The translation of different types of cultural images will also be affected by their own characteristics. The transformation of meanings and emotion of cultural images is affected by different frame operations.Various types of frame operations are used in the translation of natural cultural image;the translation of sociocultural image and personal cultural image tends to replace the frame components;most of the translation of material cultural image is to delete the frame components. The significance of the present research is providing the possible explorations of frame operations in cultural image translation of poetry. This is further combination of cognitive frame theory and English translation of cultural images.
