Constructing A Unity Of Self And Nature Theory And Empirical Verification

With the growing development of scientific psychology,the research paradigms(opposition between subject and object)of mainstream Western psychology were exported to non-Western countries,many non-Western scholars and practitioners found them to be irrelevant,incompatible or inappropriate to understanding the local population,As a consequence,some psychologists sought to develop indigenous psychologies against the dominance of Western psychology.In the context of this era,The purpose of this paper is to present a self-theory—Unity of Nature and the Self Theory—to elucidate the teachings of the Book of Changes and to test this theory by empirical method.The method is as follows:(1)The first is reviewing the current situation of the development of indigenous psychologies in China as well as the traditional cultural system of the Unity of Nature and the Self for construct a self-theory,then We used the Mandala Model of Self(MMS)developed by Professor Kwang-Kuo Hwang as a framework to analyze the Book of Changes and the concept of Tai Chi in Book of Changes is used to construct an Inward Multilayer-Stereo Mandala Model of Self(IMSMMS).We used a multilayer-stereo model to analyze the inner self structure based on a full consideration of the Book of Changes in order to present a self-theory to elucidate the teachings of the Book of Changes logically and systematically in a theoretical way.(2)The second method is compile a scale.Unity of Nature and the Self is given a operational definition that is a embodied knowledging toward to experience of indiscrimination.We began our sequence of studies by developing the Unity of Nature and the Self Scale.(3)The third method is behavioral experiment that use Spatial Stroop-like task to explore the different perception patterns with different levels of Unity of Nature and the Self.(4)The eye movement experiment is used to further explore the intrinsic mechanism for attention bias of individuals.The following conclusions are summarized through four studies:(1)Unity of Nature and the Self Theory is a culture-inclusive,logically,systematically and new self theory of psychology;(2)Unity of Nature and the Self Theory Scale has good reliability and validity;(3)The result of behavioral experiment proved the theoretical hypothesis that individuals who with different levels of Unity of Nature and the Self have different attention bias;(4)The result of eye movement experiment illustrated the significant different observed in behavioral experiment only reflected in the awareness stage of the previous information and show the attention bias based on an awareness tendency.
