In the early 20 th century,Chinese anarchists brought Esperanto into China and gained the attention of intellectuals.Ba Jin saw the article discussing Esperanto in the new youth and immediately became interested in it.Esperanto,as an artificial language, had an important influence on Ba Jin’s thought and literary creation.Anarchists such as Wu Zhihui,Liu Shipei and Shifu promoted Esperanto vigorously before and after the revolution of 1911,which brought it into the view of Chinese intellectuals.During the May 4th Movement, the discussion on Esperanto in new youth further expanded the influence of Esperanto in the whole country. This is a prerequisite for Ba Jin to have access to Esperanto.Ba Jin’s growing experience and his status as an anarchist enable him to resonate with the inner ideal of Esperanto and better accept it.Therefore,Ba Jin’s acceptance of Esperanto has its inevitability. After learning and mastering Esperanto,Ba Jin began to take part in the Esperanto movement in China. From 1928 to 1933,Ba Jin worked as a member of the Esperanto society of Shanghai and edited the magazine green light. After 1949,especially since the 1980 s,Ba Jin used his influence to participate in the international and domestic Esperanto conferences and called on more young people to learn Esperanto.Ba Jin’s views on Esperanto vary with his practice.Ba Jin’s views on Esperanto are divided into two stages. Before the founding of the People’s Republic of China, for Ba Jin,the Utopian imagination of universal harmony and global integration revealed by Esperanto reinforced each other with his anarchist thought, and provided the possibility for the realization of the dream of great harmony. However, after the founding of the People’s Republic of China,Ba Jin’s views on Esperanto were more inclined to those of the Esperanto theorists, that is,Esperanto can realize friendship and equality among different countries and nations.Esperanto has greatly influenced Ba Jin’s literary creation, especially his Chinese creation. This influence is mainly reflected in three aspects.First, linguistically speaking,Ba Jin’s works often use personal pronouns, which are influenced by Esperanto language.Second, the influence of Esperanto makes Ba Jin’s novels have acosmopolitan mind.Third, the influence of Esperanto writers on Ba Jin’s creation: the writing of heroes in the French Revolution Period was influenced by the Esperanto works of Tolstoy, and the Esperanto writer Eroshenko inspired Ba Jin’s fairy tale creation.
