Calligraphy is the crystal of Chinese traditional culture and the symbolic system with the oriental cultural characteristics.It has had more than 3000 years of history up to now.As a unique form,Chinese calligraphy creates and enriches the environment of Chinese culture.Chinese people pay more attention to characters and like using inscription on casting devices and carve characters on a monument in memory of important events.Mr.Ye Xiushan,a famous aesthetician said,“western culture values language and speaking,while Chinese culture focuses on characters and writing…Chinese culture is centered on “character study” in the in-depth structure.In Chinese traditional Confucianism Buddhism and Taoism,Confucian culture is kept in the core position of Chinese traditional culture,showing the exuberant vitality and extraordinary integration.It is always used as the mainstream value of Chinese traditional society and it has been highly praised by successive reigns and dynasties.The Temple of Confucius is the Holy Land to sacrifice Confucius and also the birthplace of Confucian culture.The authentic work in calligraphy in the Temple of Confucius is a mirror to record Confucian culture development and a window to look into Confucian culture development evolution.Stone carving,horizontal inscribed board and couplets of past dynasties in Qufu Temple of Confucius,Its functions,position and artistic style should have the typical characteristics of Confucian culture.For practical Chinese characters,authentic work of calligraphy in the Temple of Confucius firstly has the obvious “recording” function and “aesthetic” function in character contents.Based on it,presentation of Chinese character writing has the typical Confucian characteristics,including “dignity,elegance and neutralization”.This thesis will be discussed from the four parts:The first part is the introduction,which is composed of the reason for the topic selection,research purpose and significance,previous research result review,and research methods.In the second part,the author briefly summarizes the historical developmental evolution for the Temple of Confucius.The development of the Temple of Confucius is the result that governors in all dynasties constantly reinforced Confucian culture.The Temple of Confucius records Confucian culture development,thus existing status is systematically analyzed.The third part inspects the artistic style of Calligraphy in the Temple of Confucius.According to the sequence of dynasties,calligraphic characteristic of each dynasty is analyzed from Han Dynasty to Qing Dynasty to explore the aesthetic relationship between artistic style and Confucian culture art aesthetic ideal.On the basis of analyzing calligraphic contents in the Temple of Confucius,the fourth part elaborates the Confucian culture connotations in Temple of Confucius,including “respect for teachers”,“kindheartedness” and “filial piety” of Confucianism,“moderation” and “ritual”thought,so as to reinforce the cognition on calligraphic culture in the Temple of Confucius.Based on elaborating the Confucian culture connotations of calligraphy in the Temple of Confucius,this part reveals the education function and artistic aesthetic function of calligraphy in the Temple of Confucius.
