| Vocabulary learning is an essential part of English learning and has always been considered to be of great importance for English learning in primary school.For primary school students who are also English beginners,the accumulation,consolidation and mastery of vocabulary is the foundation for their future English learning.As a result,how best to guide students to learn English vocabulary has always been a hot topic among English educators.Cooperative learning is one of the learning methods advocated by the new curriculum reform.Effective cooperative learning can arouse student enthusiasm and interests to learn,improve their learning efficiency and build their capacity to cooperative which enables them to function as effective members of an increasingly globalised society.It can be seen that cooperative learning has a positive effect on students’ lifelong development.In this study the author attempts to guide students to learn English vocabulary in a cooperative way.The study is guided by the cooperative learning theory and applies it in English vocabulary learning both in class and after class.Experimental,observational interview and questionnaire methods are adopted in the study to discuss the role cooperative learning method plays in primary school English vocabulary learning.In this study,288 students from grade four in the Primary School Attached to Huludao Teachers Training College are selected as research subjects.All the classes are divided into two control groups except for Class Five,which is the experimental group.The cooperative learning pattern is applied to students’ vocabulary learning in Class Five.The experimental time is one academic year,and the group cooperative learning model is carried out in the experimental class.These three groups of students are tested before and after the experiment.The results are analyzed by the software SPSS.The aim is to test whether cooperative learning can improve the students’ proficiency in vocabulary.The content of the test includes students’ mastery of several aspects such as listening,reading,spelling,and application of the vocabulary they have learned.After the experiment,the questionnaire method is also applied.During the experiment and after the experiment,the representative students are interviewed informally,so as to make allowance for their personal and emotional feelings or other subjective factors in the process of learning vocabulary via cooperative learning.The purpose of this research thesis is to determine the impact of cooperative learning on vocabulary learning.By means of experimental implementation,questionnaires,class observation and individual interviews with students,the study aims to explore the following research questions: In what ways does cooperative learning affect the vocabulary learning of primary school students? How can cooperative learning be better applied in future vocabulary learning?Through data analysis of experimental results and the discussion of the interview,thefollowing conclusions are drawn from this study: cooperative learning effectively improves the vocabulary learning ability of pupils in grade four.Through cooperative learning,Students have improved their reading,listening,spelling and application ability of English words.Students have mastered the word learning method that is suitable for them with the help of their partners.Students’ interest of vocabulary learning is raised and their confidence is improved,thus they gradually changed from passive learners to active learners in the process of cooperative learning.Students can learn actively and overcome the difficulty of word recognition,spelling and application.At the same time,the students’ word mastery level has been improved greatly in a well-organized atmosphere of self-urging,supervision by their partners in the group and competitions among the groups. |
