Interpreting is a complex task requiring multitasking, including three indispensable steps, listening and understanding, note taking and output. No matter it's for consecutive interpreting or simultaneous interpreting, listening and understanding are the first step.If the interpreter misses out on any information or hears it wrong, the note taken down would be useless, let alone the mistakes in the output.During the process of interpreting, there are a lot of factors affecting listening and understanding, including the style of the speaker, the logic analysis of the interpreter and background knowledge. Therefore, working on listening and understanding is an important way to improve the accuracy, completeness and fluency of the output.Through case study,I analyze how different factors affect listening and understanding and put forward solutions accordingly. To better adapt to the style of the speaker, interpreters should listen to various materials, for example, speakers with different talking speed, accents and habits. What's more, interpreters should also train on retelling without notes,so as to enhance short-term memory and the capability of logic analysis, remembering the content according to the logic. In addition, preparation before interpreting and reading extensively help broaden the background knowledge of the interpreter so as to reduce the energy spent on understanding and processing.Improving listening and understanding enables interpreters to better allocate their time and energy and hence improve the overall performance.
