Guo Xi And His Lyrical Landscape

The History Comments on Guo Xi has changed rapidly in the mid twentieth century.Before that,Guo Xi was not treated as a first-rate painter by theorist.It is the research on his book Lin Quan Gao Zhi and the exhibition of his painting Early Spring made him a great Painter.But till now,we haven get a clear idea of Guo Xi's real donation in the art history.By examining the evolving background of Chinese painting theory in the 11th century and Guo Xi 's aesthetic thoughts and paintings,this article finds that the emphasize on lyrical is an important feature of Guo Xi's landscape painting and theory.In "Lin Quan Gao Zhi",Guo Xi explicitly put forward a set of theorys of lyricism of landscape painting,which includes the relationship between painter and nature,the relationship between artist and work,the relationship between artist and viewer;while the imago,structure and artistic conception in his paintings activate the cultural context and visual experience,so that the emotions expressed in the painting can be passed on to the viewer.Guo Xi's theory and practice of landscape painting echo and guide the theory of Chinese painting from "pictorial truth" to"lyricism",which has caused him to pull away from the writers and painters of the forerunner's painting theory and nurture the creation of later literati paintings.
