Cultural Misreading In Goldblatt’s Translation Of Red Sorghum—From The Perspective Of Translator’s Cultural Identity

This thesis is aimed to explore the interaction between the translator,Howard Goldblatt’s cultural identity and the cultural misreading in the English version of Red Sorghum,under the guidance of the Hermeneutic Theory in literary translation,via interdisciplinary and exemplification research methods to collect and analyze the data of Red Sorghum and explore Goldblatt’s cultural identity which influenced his translation style and explore the cultural misreading caused by Goldblatt’s cultural background and identity.In the thesis,the author takes Hermeneutic Theory as the theoretical foundation and analyzes the misreading phenomena in Red Sorghum according to George Steiner’s four aspects:trust,aggression,incorporation and compensation.The author begins the research on the translator’s education background,research field and most importantly,his national cultural identity.Through further study,the author find that the translator’s translation views are deeply influenced by his comparatively strong cultivated culture environment.This thesis has achieved such findings as following:first,misreading in literary translation is the way to improve understanding.Second,no translation can cohere the original completely.Third,the thesis tries to find a relatively optimal translator model for "going out" Chinese literature.The theoretical implications are as follows:first,to a real faithful translation,bi-culture is much important than bi-language.Second,cultural-enriched literary works could be taken as the research subject.The practical implications are fivefold:First,a competent translator should involve oneself in different cultures thoroughly.Second,the translator must have profound literary background,the style of the original with the target language to display,which is the highest requirement in literary translation.Third,because of the profound influence of the translator’s cultural identity on translation works,we Chinese translators should master and be familiar with our mother language well,its the foundation to give excellent version.Fourth,as English is still the "global language",we must be proficient in English and learn more western culture to make the translation version much more close to the original text.Fifth,the thesis can also expand research findings of translators as well as Howard Goldblatt individually.There are also many limitations in the thesis and suggestions for the following researches in the conclusion chapter.
