The huge differences between Chinese and English make it difficult for interpreters to prevent negative transfer of mother tongue.Chinese is characterized by hypotaxis, while English is characterized by parataxis.Without a thorough comprehension of the differences between these two languages in both grammar rules and mindsets, interpreters cannot convey the message of the original language effectively in Chinese-English interpreting. In order to tackle this problem, interpreters must be familiar with the characteristics of Chinese language and the different mindsets of Chinese and English, and able to apply the interpretive theory and functional equivalence theory to help them deverbalize the original contents. This paper mainly explores the negative transfer caused by the differences between Chinese and English, analyzes the Chinese rhetoric and proposes coping strategies. The case study analyzes how to apply the interpretive theory and functional equivalence theory flexibly in the practice of Chinese-English interpreting,so as to prevent the negative transfer of mother tongue and thereby improving the quality of interpretation.
