Vocabulary learning has become an increasingly important part in English studying.The sufficiency of vocabulary will not only affects English reading speed and communication ability of students,but also serves as an important foundation of English abilities development.In recent years,vocabulary problems have appeared more and more frequently in high school students’ English test,which indicates that the inefficiency of vocabulary learning is now hindering the improvement of students’ English abilities.However,in current English classes,vocabulary problems have still not been paid enough attention by students or teachers,which means the deep and contextual meanings of vocabulary have been ignored,thus results in the situation of low efficiency in vocabulary education.The paper summarizes the current situation on the basis of vocabulary teaching and aims to apply empirical study to verify if the Elaboration Strategy can facilitate students’ vocabulary retention,which eventually improve students’ English comprehensive ability.An experiment has been made on some students in Heilongjiang experimental middle school by questionnaires,interviews with teachers and students,and the methods of test and post test.Then SPSS software was used to analyze the collected data.According to the results of the experiment,the author believes that the Elaboration Strategy plays an active role in improving students’ vocabulary memory efficiency and enlarging students’ vocabulary.At the end of the paper,based on the experimental results and the actual situation of the current high school English vocabulary teaching,some suggestions were given for the future vocabulary teaching.The previous research findings,research on Elaboration Strategy,mostly from the perspective of other disciplines,such as mathematics,biology or chemistry teaching,therefore,this study proposes to apply the Elaboration Strategy into English vocabulary teaching in senior high school,so that the deficiency of traditional studies to a certain extent can be avoided.
