A Study Of English-Chinese Translation Strategies Of Negative Sentences In Est

As a basic means of expression,negation is the most common grammatical phenomenon in different languages,it plays important role in both English and Chinese and is widely used in various styles.Scientific style draws the attention of translators and researchers because of its practical significance.Negation is English for Science and Technology(EST),characterized by its varieties in from and meaning,is regarded as one of the difficulties in students' language acquisition and teachers' translation teaching.Thus the thesis discusses negative sentences in EST and explores translation strategies of negation from English to Chinese(E-C).Literatures on negation show negative sentences are generally divided into six types by classification standard of form and meaning,they are transferred negation,absolute negation,partial negation,semi-negation,double negation and implied negation.Collecting typical examples of negative sentences from textbooks of EST(details are presented in Appendix),the author analyzes structure patterns and functions of six types of negative sentences.As a scientific writing,EST is featured with communicative function to convey scientific and technological information to readers.Negative sentences,widely used in EST,have the characteristics of rigorous logic,focused information and simple language.So the translation of negative sentences follows the principles of EST translation including accuracy,loyalty and conciseness.Consulting extensive literatures and materials,the author concludes three translation strategies for negative sentences.They are corresponding translation,transferring translation and conversion translation.The thesis holds that three translation strategies are effective methods to deal with translation issues of negative sentences in EST,they bridge the gap of sentence structure and expressing pattern between English negative sentences and Chinese ones.The motivation of this thesis coming from the urgency to solve problems the author encountered in English negative sentence acquisition and translation,which implies this research is basic and practical discussion on translation issues,explains why no translation theory is adopted to frame the thesis and only inductively translation methods are presented by illustrating numbers of translation examples.This research hopes to offer inspirations for learning and teaching English negation,and to provide references for E-C translation of negative sentences.
