On Human Reason

With the development of society,women 's status has been greatly improved in politics,economy,law,and society.And in many aspects,women have equal rights just like men.Gender discrimination in our social life is still common,and one reason of this phenomenon that is important is that gender bias and gender discrimination are still deep-rooted in social culture and people's mind.People think that women are subordinate to men,and men dominate women.In The Man of Reason——‘Male' and ‘Female' in Western Philosophy,Genevieve Lloyd described the thought about the relationship between reason and gender in the history of Western philosophy from the Plato,Bacon to Hegel,Beauvoir and other philosophers.Most of philosophers thought that reason exclusively belongs to men,while women only have sense and sensibility.And men rule over women legitimately.Lloyd highlighted the male-female distinction,in its various forms of alignment with distinctions between reason and its opposites throughout the western philosophical tradition,in terms of the operations of philosophical metaphor.Therefore,this article will be based on Lloyd's book The Man of Reason——‘Male'and‘Female' in Western Philosophy.Firstly,I focus on the thought of Plato and Bacon which is about the relationship between reason and gender,and explore the essential meaning of the conception of Reason which belongs to men,and clarify how Reason and men are combined;and then through a historical analysis and theoretical research,I show the historical conception of maleness of Reason in the history of western philosophy,and figure out the philosophical roots of the discrimination of women;finally,I briefly reflect the ideal about the man of reason.
