Critical Discourse Analysis is aimed to analyze discourse power and ideology hidden beneath the discourse. As one of the most important ways to deliver information to the public, news reports are claimed to be objective. With the influence of socio-political factors and different cultural backgrounds, news reports focus on distinctive aspects of the same event. As a result,it would be useful for the public to know the truly core meaning of news reports,if those news reports are analyzed from a perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis. This thesis focuses on twenty pieces of news reports selected from China Daily(CD)and British Broadcast Company(BBC)with key words of “Same-sex Marriage Legalization”.It intends to find out differences between news reports from CD and BBC through the analysis from the perspective of CDA,based on Fairclough's Three Dimensional Model of Discourse(TDMD)and Halliday's Systematic-Functional Grammar(SFG).This essay explores the following research questions:1)Are there any differences between news reports from CD and BBC in linguistic features?2)Are there any differences between news reports from CD and BBC in the reporting tone and content selection?3)Are there any differences between news reports from CD and BBC in the aspects of ideology and relative public attitude towards homosexuality? To answer those questions, this research is conducted in the following procedures. In the description stage, language features are analyzed from lexical choice, hedge and transitivity. In the interpretation stage, the reporting style andhidden attitude are dealt through the analysis of modality, modes, news sources and title analysis. In the explanation stage, the thesis explains differences shown in the first two stages. In the end,the hidden ideology is analyzed.Reasonable prediction is made on the public attitude towards homosexuality. Results of the research show that differences exist in news reports from CD and BBC in the aspects of linguistic features, reporting styles and content selection.CD reports news on homosexuality in a more conservative and objective way.Reporters from BBC are analyzed to be open to homosexuality.Although news reports struggle to be objective and impartial, there are still differences in the aspects of linguistic features and content selection, which may result from different social practice including ideology and cultural background. The study indicates that it is workable and effective to analyze the hidden ideology and attitude with the analytic tool combining Critical Discourse Analysis and Systematic-Functional Grammar.A new perspective to conduct research on homosexual discourse has been offered.Readers may be cultivated in critical thinking.
