As a Chinese director who has been active in Hollywood for more than 40 years,Wayne Wang did not break through the paralysis of the Western mainstream discourse. The Chinese males in his films have a strong "derogatory" feature and are marginal characters in the Western ethnic sequence. Those characters satisfy the western vision of the East.In a sense, the "derogatory" creation mechanism is "Oriental Orientalism",which reflects his departure from the traditional Chinese ethical culture centering on the patriarchal system and the catering to the Western mainstream values. At the same time,"Oedipus Complex" and "Gender Paranoia" of Wayne Wang further exacerbate the degree of "deprecation",deconstruct the traditional gender paradigm, create an imbalance of gender discourse and constitute another binary opposition. To a certain extent,"Derogatory" shaping mode of Chinese men characters questioned the myth of extreme male power in China, criticized the oppression of feudal rituals on women, and endowed women with a dominant position and personality. However, behind the "derogatory" mechanism is more about the director's disillusionment after seeking "self-identity" and the compromise between different cultures. The identification and rebellion, enlargement and concealment impregnate the sense of incapability and frustration of Chinese people who construct their own cultural identity under the Western visual threshold. In the current era of increasingly frequent cross-cultural practices arising, literary and art workers should overcome the narrow mode of creation, break the "non-good or bad" dual cognitive set, seek for the EastWest and Yin-Yang balance, and reshape the "lagging" Chinese image.
