Chinese science fiction The Three-Body Problem has won the 73rd Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2015,which officially brings Chinese science fiction to foreign readership and is widely accepted by English-speaking readers. It has not only further broken the unilateral flow of western culture into China, but also helps in making Chinese culture go global, promoting cultural confidence and ideological exchange, and telling Chinese stories.Currently, the translation of science fiction has been marginalized in contemporary Chinese academia. In retrospect of previous studies on the translation of The Three-Body Problem, they are roughly divided into two categories:analyses of literary value and practical significance in the trilogy;studies on its translation strategies and methods from perspectives of translation theories. The book contains a large number of terms with Chinese characteristics concerning historical events, figures, culture, science and technology, sayings and so on,which pose great difficulties to English-speaking readers. Therefore, translator Ken Liu intentionally adds some footnotes of background knowledge and information, highlighting his subjectivity as a translator.More importantly, this thesis will analyze how the feminist translation theory is applied in The Three-Body Problem in terms of its three major translation strategies(i.e.,supplementing,prefacing and footnoting, and hijacking),so as to cope with cultural default, make compensation and eliminate gender discrimination against women in the original text.First,an introduction is made to the research background, significance and structure of the thesis, and then the previous translation studies of The Three-Body Problem are reviewed.Particularly,it makes a brief introduction to the terms with Chinese characteristics and under the guidance of the feminist translation theory explores the translation strategies of those terms.Last the thesis comes to a conclusion that the feminist translation theory corresponds to the translator?s strategies. It is hoped that the analysis of the translation of terms with Chinese characteristics in The Three-Body Problem can provide reference and guidance for the dissemination of Chinese culture.
